Scott has announced the route for this year’s ride in Damascus. Here’s the dirt:

Trail Description:	This year we will try a new trail on the south side of the Virginia Creeper trail above Taylor’s Valley.(blue rectangle blaze) This trail will bypass about 4 miles of the Virginia Creeper Trail between Taylor’s Valley and Creek Junction (the two high straight trestles). The Taylor’s Valley Trail starts at the far end of Taylor’s Valley as a gravel double track on the right where the paved road ends and the Creeper goes back in the woods. After about a mile, it is gated and turns to a grassy double track with some open meadows. About a mile from the end, it becomes a single track for the descent to the creek

	Once at Creek Junction, we will ride up the road to US58, tun left, and ride a few miles to FS90. Before the top, we will take a left onto Bushwacker Trail (yellow diamond blaze), which will eventually connect to the Iron Mountain Trail.

Stay on the Iron Mountain trail down Mauck (sp?) Hollow into Damascus.

Be sure to pack a lunch and bring plenty of water.

Meeting Place: 6:30 Dublin, McDonalds parking lot. Here we will consolidate rides to Damascus.

The Plan:

7:00	Leave Dublin on I-81 south for Damascus (Take SR 91 south at exit 29)

8:30	Arrive at Damascus. Meet at the Caboose Park on the west end of town. (turn right at stop sign)

9:00	Begin ride up Creeper.

3:00	Arrive back at Damascus (estimated)

It’s coming up this weekend, and is sure to be fun - come out and race, or just get out on the course, pretend to race, and just enjoy a great ride, food, and fun! Here’s the description from Ben Brown:

Just a heads up The Rowdy Dawg Mountain Bike Race is coming up on October 26th. The volunteers have done work on the trails in the last year so they should be well groomed and fast for this year’s race.

We have a caterer lined up, real food will be provided after, the weather should be perfect for a day in the woods. Get on the phone and call up your racer buddies, challenge their manhood, place some bets - get folks fired up! Even have custom Rowdy Dawg socks to give to the first 70 racers to sign up on BikeReg.

If you want to volunteer just reply an email to me and we’ll set you up - or come out last minute and sign up at the tent.

Heres a link to the race information and updated course descriptions:

Hope to see you there!

Our ride on the VA Creeper and Iron Mountain was great today - 32 miles, beautiful weather, the company of good friends, and sweet trails! I’ve posted the GPS data at http://gotow.motionbased.com/. After you go to the data for the ride, if you click on the “Google Earth” link under the little map, it’ll download a .kml file to your computer that you can import into Google Earth to do a fly-through (you’ll need Google Earth, of course - you can get that at http://earth.google.com/).

And hey, I was wrong about the amount of climbing - it was 3900 feet, not 3000.

Thanks to Scott for organizing this annual fun-fest, and to Glenn for letting me ride with him in the Largest Non-Commercial Vehicle on Earth.

Kent, can you post the picture you got of Scott after his crash?

Hey - riding the Slickrock Trail out in Moab was absolutely amazing! I just wanted to post a couple of pics - it was like riding on sandpaper, up and down steep little hills, and never, ever having your wheels slip - it was absolutely incredible. I found myself standing and plowing up 20 and 30 foot, 45 degree (or more) climbs - all you had to do was keep enough weight on the front to keep the wheel from lifting - traction was never an issue - you just leaned forward and pedaled up the climbs and prayed your legs wouldn’t burn up before you hit the top.

<img src='/wp-pictures/DSC00368.JPG' width="400" height="300" alt=''"/>

Check out the little white dots painted on the rock (if you can see them with the picture reduced). Following the trail is just a matter of keeping to the white dots on the rocks

<img src='/wp-pictures/DSC00401.JPG' width="400" height="300" alt=''"/>

Me on the Intense 5.5 I rented from Poison Spider Bikes (great bike, and a great shop!) with slickrock disappearing into the background (the trail’s painted on there somewhere…)

OK, so I got this new GPS thing, and I thought “yeah, now I can save heart rate, elevation, and all that - nice little toy.” Well, then I found out that you can export rides to Google Earth and overlay them over satellite data and actually do a fly-through of the ride. THIS IS SO AMAZING! Anyway, here’s a picture of the route of our Carvin’s Cove ride last week. It doesn’t do this justice at all, but I can’t post a fly-through yet. (Well, OK, I just don’t have time - I’m supposed to be working…)

And here’s the elevation profile. Yeah, turn your head sideways - I didn’t want to shrink it, so sideways is the only way it fits.
